Claverton Manor
p the steep hill beyond the dense architectural
masterpiece which is Bath, England, perched just over
the hill above an idyllic sparsely built green valley, resides
a villa house museum and its ancillary exhibition pavilions.
Visually, Claverton Manor, circa 1820, is properly situated,
beautifully sober, tall, possessing aristocratic bearing
without being stuffy. It is Palladian, it is fresh.
One of the very few American museums outside of
the United States, the American Museum in Britain
comfortably occupies these premises. It is presided over
by an eminent American scholar and author Richard
Wendorf, former Director and Librarian of both the
Houghton Library at Harvard University and the venerable
Boston Athenaeum.
