Christopher has both collected Armstrong's Mandala series and commissioned several other sequences, including those devoted to (or in honour of ) the Olympics, Thomas Jefferson, Queen Elizabeth II (for her Diamond Jubilee), and the Last Supper. As Armstrong acknowledges, Christopher has essentially become part of a collaborative process, suggesting treatments as well as topics. Blurred and glowing with colour, the photographs are as unlike the rest of Christopher's collection as one might imagine – except for the fact that the blurred interpretation of iconic figures suggests a mystery of its own. In Christopher's view, we encounter a 'depth of spirit and an acknowledgement of the other-worldliness of the human condition.' It is important to note that the Hyland Collection has not left the traditional American photographic aesthetic behind.
