a guest, for it has been restored and preserved by private owners Katrin Lesser and Ben Buschfeld, who live nearby. Lesser is a noted landscape architect specializing in the accurate rehabilitation and conservation of important historic gardens and parks in Berlin, among them the gardens of the Hufeisensiedlung and the Falkenburg Estate, another of Taut's projects. Rental of Taut's Hufeisensiedlng villa to architecture lovers is weekly. Tautesheim is a living architecture museum. Its rooms reenact the color schemes Taut so carefully set forth. The living room is pale green, the master bedroom deep bright blue. The second bedroom is yellow; and the kitchen has a red floor and blue ceiling. Much of the furniture is of the tubular steel beloved of the Bauhaus, yet there are homely, even old-fashioned touches: a comfortable white settee in the living room, a lacy rendering of the motto "Tautes Heim/ Gluck allein" ("Taut's home/ happiness alone") on the wall. Seen in its own day as too opulent for the masses, Taut's house might appear austere to contemporary tastes. But it stands as an emblem of the force of ideas which only appear to be in conflict, e.g. function and spirituality, but which, in the hands of an idealist master, are synthesized into dwellings that might, like Taut's Glass Pavilion, be called "little temples of beauty."
