is on display at the American Museum in Britain and
which substantially visually investigates the subject of
transformation. In my collection I have a surreal photograph
by Thomas Barbey which depicts a giant tree as traffic hub
and byway. Shortly after visiting Highclere, my thoughts
on this great cedar tree were mirrored by the prominent
positioning of a
massive tree at
the center of the
green and pleasant
land
portrayed
as a British ideal
that materialized,
seemingly
out
of nowhere, at
the center of the
London
Olympic
Games Stadium on
opening night.
To visit Highclere is
to know the world
of the fictitious
Crawleys and better
still, the world of
the
remarkable
Carnarvons and the
community which
made and make their lives possible, today represented
by the very attractive and charming George and Fiona,
the Eighth Earl and Countess.
