The same sense of detachment holds for a folly at the
end of the Great Lawn, composed of numerous classical
columns atop a small incline. Resembling a roofless
temple, it is, nevertheless, called 'Jackdaw's Castle.'
The great garden wall and newly placed steroidal root
chairs seem quite separate from the whole. Such is
the singular power of this extraordinary house over its
dependencies, save for one garden component which
claims pride of place.
In the television series and obviously in the real life
history of the house, the massive two hundred fifty year
old cedar tree (one of several located all around) in the
middle of the principal extensive lawn, just beyond the
HYLAND
