H aving viewed for hours on television the rooms of Highclere Castle, the seat of the Carnarvon family, which is cast as the fictional Downton Abbey in the BBC series of the same name, I wanted to see this great pile's façade, its texture, the courtyard, driveways, lawns and gardens, to know them in ways that television had not afforded. My visit to them on an overcast July summer day would provide these exterior spaces equal billing. They would surpass my already high expectations. HYLAND
