labyrinth of pathways eagerly discovering new aspects
on each journey.
The byways comprise soil, sod, leaves, with occasional
bridges with names like Galton's Trail, Darwin's Stretch,
and Digger's Rift: a reference to Europe's first communist
movement which occurred on this land in 1649. Entire
stretches of trail, such as Bamboo Cave, are completely
enclosed overhead. Rustic signs announce names
invented by the owners and their children to memorialize
visits by friends, family experiences and amusing play
on words. Some of the best are Sasha's Leap, Occam's
Edge and Distant Chief Molistaches. The first pays tribute
to a friend's daring jump across a stream and the last
memorializes their beloved father's adventures. These
pathways commemorate the arteries of the family's
collective experience.
