surprisingly large and quite beautiful garden, at the end
of which Beckford created the famous trail that led up
to his tower at the top of Lansdown Hill. The trail has
all but disappeared, the tower has been successfully
restored at great expense, and Beckford's huge marble
funeral casket remains in place in the cemetery adjoining
the tower. Beckford's devoted followers, who remain
legion, make their pilgrimages to the tower and to the
crescent throughout the year. Rarely a day goes by when
someone doesn't stand in front of the bridge and take
a photograph as I look down from the library in which I
am currently writing this essay. And in the spring and
summer, the ewes and their lovely lambs in the pasture
attract an additional stream of hardy sightseers.
