to hold any actual books and I try to keep my collection
of "smalls" grouped together on wooden surfaces. But
a little tinkering with the shelves has provided me with
room – for the first time in a long time – to display my
CDs in alphabetical order (classical on the left, jazz on the
right) as well as a number of my small prints, including a
rare etching by Angelica Kauffman taken from a painting
by Guercino.
And that, of course, brings us to the bridge, a Grade-I
listed space in its own right although some of its history
remains to be determined. Our current thinking is that
the oak-and-walnut bookcases on the right-hand side
were imported from Fonthill Abbey after Beckford sold
it. They mesh very nicely with the frames of the two
doors and with the three windows looking down upon
