underscore the warm glow of brick, the cool dignity
of stone, and the formidability of traditional structures,
ranging from the florid portal of a fin-de-siècle New York
hotel to hallowed temple ruins in Greece and Italy, not
to mention a landmark or two on Columbia's grounds in
Manhattan's Morningside Heights.
As Paul Goldberger, who has been called "the leading
figure in architectural criticism," points out in his foreword
to the sketchbook, Van Doren's gracious watercolors
