whose core beliefs were generally in sharp contrast to
those of the ancient lands of Europe which they had
abandoned or been driven from. Their movement through
American history and physically across the breadth of
the vast American continent, is symbolized by the 18th
century Conestoga covered wagon, the precursor to
those of the 19th century and to the Fords and Chevvies
that would cross the continent in the 20th century, which
is given pride of place at the entrance of the museum.
Quakers, Puritans, Catholics, Jews, Scotch Irish,
adventurers, fugitives, slaves, indentured servants,
contrary frontiersmen, dissidents, the odd Dane,
Dutchman and Frenchman and even, arguably, one of
America's earliest drug barons, are commemorated,
among others; these folks were at odds with the
status quo, as would also be the case with many of
their Anglican, nominally English, fellow citizens. Their
presence would forever alter Native American society,
