Left to right: Sally Man Holding Virginia 1989, Center and Right:
Marcus Leatherdale, Othello 1984, Silent Scream 1992
collected and what he has created as a photographer himself.
His own work has long been focused on single photographs,
usually in black-and-white, with an eye to landscape, seascape,
and the built environment. His new work, on the other hand,
consists of a series of prints that chronicle the evolution of a
white, tattooed man as he slowly becomes darker. The series,
shot in colour but still preserving the dramatic contrast between
light and dark, is entitled Transformation and it asks us to
consider just what kind of change is taking place here. Does
the transformation belong to the subject? To the photographer?
To both of them? To us? What, precisely, does transformation
mean?
