Invisible at first glance, the farmhouse had a backyard of
one hundred acres, a vast estate in Hamptons terms, an
area with among the most substantial summer houses
in America. The farm occupies one of arguably the finest
parcels of land in the Hamptons, stretching hundreds and
hundreds of feet from road to bay. Nevertheless, until
recently, Fairview, land rich, was a struggling local potato
farm, whose fourth generation owners, the Ludlows, had
not given in to development.
This state of affairs began to change substantially when
Harry and his wife, Barbara, launched a retail farm stand
offering a wide range of farm and bakery products. He
is now often found presiding over the center of his stand,
at the cash register, tall and splendidly white haired.
