craving for autonomous speed, diminishing the railroads. Now, in a reversal, designers, architects, engineers, planners, manufacturers, labor, government, finance and citizens should again embrace newly conceived railroads as a means to transport goods and people. There is a reason why Warren Buffett recently took control of the nation���s largest railway freight company. Conservation, peace of mind and ease of transport necessitate it. Whatever growing pains, and there are many, the national Chinese rail system has, in addition to French, German and Japanese speed train systems, provided a blueprint for the future, as does our own railroad expertise and that of other countries. After all, in the event, the creation of a new national rapid railway system in any country will constitute an international effort. It is noteworthy that contemporaneous to Eisenhower���s building what would come to be known as Interstate I-95, his presidency saw massive efforts in numerous technologies. Perhaps Eisenhower, an expert during his military career in assessing America���s production capacities, had the right idea. Perhaps it is technology, manufacturing and asphalt together that make for prosperity: sixty years on, one can imagine him announcing a visionary rail initiative. Erroneous financial instruments as economic currency would have baffled leaders of that era. Americans and citizens of other countries have only just begun the pilgrims��� progress in a new millennium. Passing across Massachusetts Bay, let alone the Atlantic, seems a breeze in our staggeringly over connected interactive society. Nevertheless, Provincetown artists should be able to cross Massachusetts Bay in a high speed hydrofoil, connect by high-speed train to New York and cross the HYLAND
