This house has a wonderful dimension in its exotic
eastern room, especially for those who are enamored
of the Mediterranean, from Majorca to Patmos and
Bodrum. Here, far from its origins, the flavor of that
world is celebrated, affording everyone memories of
those wonderful lands, especially summer memories.
I am reminded also of the novel by Paul Bowles, The
Sheltering Sky, and the lush cinematic interpretation of
it by Bernardo Bertolucci, particularly the scenes where
Debra Winger is immured with the handsome Tuareg,
Belquassim, in a kasbah. Reach out, pierce the fine
fabric of the sheltering sky, take repose. Jamie Drake
has prepared, beneath the broad American skies, a place
of perfect repose, of calm shelter. H Lisa Zeiger
