These pictures of the Village Blacksmiths Shop in
Barnstable, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, although
today forging small accessories, are a last vestige of
his world. Ironically, this smiths shop, with its origins
in the 19th century, is testimony to just how recently
horsepower drove us. Jim Ellis, an eleventh generation resident of the town, a Mayflower and Wampanoag tribe descendant, presides, using tools that both
his father and uncle employed before him, starting in
1908. Frederick Kent, the original smithy, later became the village representative for Willys-Knight and
Wippet Cars, themselves long gone.
