Pair the desk with a black-lacquered,
gold leaf-incised Regency chair, Grecian in profile, handsomely upholstered
in gold and wheat colored striped silk
velvet. The end table is black lacquer
with a black and white hand painted eglomise (gold leaf backed glass)
drawer fronts and white marble top.
Completing the suite is a gold painted aluminum cocktail table with spiky
legs, with a white faux onyx top.
The designers, Russell Minion and
Juan Carlos Gutierrez, were inspired
to create these pieces by two recent journeys, the first to the Peterhof Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia, the second to the Haga Pavilion
in Stockholm. Both featured liberal
gold leaf details in their decoration,
butdone in a very restrained modern way. When it came time to design a room and furniture for the 2011
Stately Homes by the Sea Designer
Show House in Rumson, New Jersey, the pair decided to fuse the two
designs. The walls have panels that
are cleated to the walls with abstracted grids in gold leaf and hand made
wall paper in between.
