beach and water culture, all of which makes Provincetown a
compelling place to visit and inhabit, perhaps different from
that of the first art colony pioneers, but every bit as absorbing.

later of Hensche and Hofmann, to that of Pierson and other
younger artists is the invaluable legacy of this exhibition and its
accompanying catalogue. Provincetown emerges as a significant
microcosm of art in America over the past century, a pocket
