In many ways, the history of the Provincetown art colony and
the exhibition history of Tirca���s gallery are one and the same
��� especially as Heller and Smith note: ���as evidenced by the
ongoing display of original graphics by major American artists,
the appreciation and celebration of Milton Avery, the inclusion
of young artists in established galleries, and the continued
support and acceptance of modern art
After her untimely death in 1974, Tirca���s husband and son
continued the gallery for several years. But the national arts
culture had changed and many of the collectors who had
flocked to the town began to go elsewhere.
I remember being at the annual meeting of the Provincetown
Art Association in either 1968 or 1969 when Hudson Walker
