Cape Cod School of Art but once in Provincetown each young
artist began the individual journey toward mature work.
Provincetown was now a nationally known destination for
collectors drawn to modernism. In their essay, The Tirca Karlis
Gallery: Pivotal Decades of Provincetown Art, Julie Heller and
Whitney Smith convey the diversity and energy of both the
era and Tirca herself. She represented a broad spectrum of
creative energy as demonstrated in the benefit exhibition that
she organized in July of 1965. That exhibition, greeted with
great critical acclaim, included work by Xavier Gonzalez,
Marsden Hartley, Henry Hensche, Franz Kline, Karl Knaths,
