Still life by Robert Douglas Hunter 2006
To locate his summer school for painting Charles Hawthorne
made an informed choice, inspired by information from other
artists. He knew that the light was superb, the town prosperous
and reasonably priced bed and board could be found for his
students. There was good transportation from both New
York and Boston and since there was no art supply store in
Provincetown, he could open one to supply his students,
supplementing his income.
By 1914 the art colony had grown beyond Hawthornes school
to include actors, playwrights, authors, poets and musicians.
With the outbreak of World War I there was a huge influx of
expatriates who were drawn to the Provincetowns ambiance,
reminiscent of the French coast, as well as its glorious light.
The Provincetown Art Association was founded that same year
to serve the needs of the expanding art colony.
