ultramarine blue is one of the most beautiful colors or
lemon yellow or fire engine red.
The color blue, he said, comes from Provincetown. In
New York, he said, the shade is called Motherwell Blue.
All summer I see blue and white and sand color more
than anything else, so I begin to use those colors a lot. Its
like osmosis; the colors
fill me. It is these colors,
you will see in the Beside
the Sea exhibition. And
several works in the show
relate to the Open series,
one of Motherwells most
important groups of work.
Composed with a U
shape drawn on a flat field
of color, the works in the
Open series combine the
painterly with the gestural
approach.
The
U
suggests a window or a
door opening up to a vast
space. The influences for
this series can be related
Robert Motherwell to Mondrians geometric
Beside The Sea No.26
and Matisses
1962 forms
colors.
