three-story, cedar-shingled home. The back of the house
looked out on the beach and Cape Cod Bay. We talked
on the deck overlooking that view. A wicker table was
adorned with a red and blue Cinzano umbrella. Wroughtiron furniture, a blue
chaise, and a bright
yellow plastic bucket,
which he referred to
when our conversation
turned
to
color,
completed the picture.
The
Provincetown
light
was
filtered
through a haze. The
blue of the sea and
sky, a signature in his
work, had dissolved
into shades of gray,
leaving his blue eyes
the singular attraction.
His sandy hair was
streaked with gray,
and his summer tan
showed up nicely
against a red and blue
striped shirt and navy
shorts.

Sun and Shadow, 1971
