The holy island of Patmos sustained prosperous autonomy
under centuries of Ottoman preeminence in the eastern
Mediterranean. The island���s trading fleet was well known.
It was occupied twice by the Italians. The local abbot,
much respected, answers directly to the Patriarchship.
The island���s citizens and their houses have a history
and aura of the cosmopolitan. Profound theological
discourse and groundbreaking efforts towards Greek
independence found succor and voice in Patmos.
