or gravel pathways. They have gazeboes, ancient lawn
and porch furniture beside small patches of garden,
nothing too exuberant. Numerous chimneys punctuate
steep roofs atop houses of many periods and styles, but
mostly 18th and 19th century.
Village greens, houses of worship, summer theatres and
main streets define each village with little of the ubiquitous
strip malls found elsewhere. There is a consistent
irregularity to the elements which form the whole, each
component of which is sympathetic to the other. There
is a respect for antiquity, ne���er a desire to upstage it or
