We made our way to the new Donghia showroom, where
we were greeted like design royalty. The showroom
was days old, and still being accessorized and tweaked
for its opening. Chuck Chewning, creative director of
Donghia, serendipitously was at the space when we
arrived. Chewning gave us the grand tour, which soon
turned to Mr. Hadley giving us a history lesson on Angelo
Donghia���s archived furniture.
In Donghia���s ���Manhattan
Room��� Mr. Hadley recounted
a time in the 70���s when Ricky
and Ralph Lauren moved
to their new apartment
overlooking Central Park. The
couple invited Mr. Hadley to
the apartment for decorating
tips and ideas. No art on
the walls, it was minimal and
simply modern, the Donghia
custom designed ���Ricky���
sofa in the grand room and
expansive views of central
park. Ricky wanted a sofa
comfortable and deep that you could sit cross-legged
in comfortably.
���When they asked what I would do to the space, I looked
around and said, ���Nothing! It is perfect the way it is.��� The
view of central park was the artwork, and it didn���t need
anything else.���
