best, freshest wines under the
current growing conditions
in light of global warming as
well as producing what the
market wants. It is much more
expensive to make a traditional
wine. The wines of Gran Riserva
are in storage for five years
before they can be sold, which
means the grower is in debt for
five years. The more modern
wine without lengthy storage
in oak yields a return on money
much faster. The tasting may
simply reflect our palates but
both of us were fonder of the
traditional wines than the more
modern ones. It was our feeling
that the more modern Spanish
wines were indistinguishable
from more modern wines grown
in other countries.
