to state circulars. Yet, this image, however blurred, could be loved by a Sargent or a Boldini. It glitters, in regal purple like the circle of women whom I saw around their totem, Givenchy, at a Royal wedding a few years ago. It is warm, a la Parkinson, pops like a Warhol and it is stately as a Beaton. The Queen in full maturity, off center, to the right in the image, Corgi roaming off to the left, has something of the Trumans about it, the Midwestern presidential couple who rose to the occasion, did their duty and quietly continued on. These attributes are reflected in the earthy color of the field. While the Queen uses State occasions to affirm a country���s culture, often to affirm aspects of Western culture itself, she is a monarch so certain of her destiny, of her role in constitutional government, that there is, also, a natural, steady simplicity about her way. Those who would criticize her style should think again, steadfast and steady, so she goes, and goes well. There are those among us, this writer included, who might, from time to time, disagree with the various governments formed in her name; we might disagree, citing historic grievances. Let us not forget we fought a Revolutionary War. But let us always remember that during the second Elizabethan era, Elizabeth II personifies modern, democratic monarchy, however hereditary and HYLAND
