G
ozo is one of the most pleasant places in
Europe. Barely six miles long, it is encrusted with jewels
of social, cultural, religious, architectural and artistic
sublimity, rarely if ever found in such a confined area. It
is of paramount importance that Gozos light never be
dulled.
Daniel Cilia photographs Gozo, in the light, with a
sensitivity and depth of knowledge of place that will be
recognized by readers enamored of Tuscany. Born on
Gozo, he believes, some of my photographs resemble
Tuscany: half of me lives in Tuscany now and half of
me lives in Gozo. Both places resonate aesthetically
profoundly.
The light, I just love light and what it does to us. Gozo
is my home, one knows it, one sees it, Gozo has great
light. The light that you experience from one to five years
old sticks with you, it forms your cognitive record of how
things look. Between zero and five years old we learn
everything: how to see. There is great light in Malta and
throughout the world, each different, each special.
