fitting pendulum. Whereas Bateman often has more
contained scenes of Gozotan landscape, substantially
dominated by architecture, his granddaughter luxuriates
in panoramic, almost jeweled scenes, stressing the
flora, the made environment represented by a labyrinth
of stone walls.
There is in Willis���s work a happy romanticism, in
Bateman���s, a more somber record. He knew the ancient
world, in particular of Gozo, would irrevocably change
soon. Lucy, painting well into the post-modernist period,
celebrates, identifying subjects still lingering, reminiscent
