London, of Bateman���s oils, 1965 ��� 1970, also of Malta
and Gozo, and also in this issue of HYLAND. Bateman
enthralled the British Empire, between the great Wars of
the twentieth century, with his assiduous cartoons and
send-up of privileged life. His latent ambition, to be a
painter, was realized, in Malta and Gozo, where he lived
at the end of his life.
Where Bateman���s paintings have the solidity and
opacity of stone, Willis has tackled these same land and
villagescapes in a medium, watercolor, that is, by definition,
transparent. If anything, she is more of a documentarian
than her grandfather, but she has followed faithfully in
