to 19th century novels which involve the search for an
origin, or in more human terms, the search for a father.
Great Expectations (2002) reminds us of Dickens��� novel
of the same name, in which the orphan, Pip, must search
for his ���benefactor,��� in symbolic terms, his father. Kline���s
painting shows a white apparition, a ghost, the Holy
Ghost perhaps, the unseen Father of the Trinity?
Scholar���s table with Thirteen Objects evokes two strands
of reasoning: the first draws a parallel between these
objects and the traditional altar garnishing comprising
incense burners, candlesticks and the like, not to mention
religious icons and votives; the second is a cabinet of
curiosities: every one of these objects speaks to the
unfamiliar, even the creepy. Curated with great finesse,
however strange, they intrigue, much like the vast array
