he architecture of our era has had a very good run
during the last two decades. Remarkable buildings, from
Bilbao and Shanghai to Milwaukee, signal the maturity
and increasing aesthetic viability of the period.
Few
proposed
architectural
projects
address the modernism
of this moment in
relationship to the distant
past more remarkably
than the Filfla Chapel
by Maltese architect,
Richard England. The
chapel is to be literally
carved out from solid
stone below the rim of
towering cliffs above the
sea. Visitors will access
the Chapel via an elevator
and stairs that descend
from the earth���s surface.
Visitors will then proceed to sit on a series of benches
carved out of the same stone.
The view out to sea frames a small island, Filfla, which,
in prehistory, was used as a focal point by nearby temple
