W ith the oldest standing structure in the world, fittingly called Gargantua, it is clear that Malta knows a great deal about building and design. Champion of twentieth century modernism, architect Richard England, has an international clientele. In a nation of spectacular classical churches, England designed a modernist sacred space, Manikata, which he declared as a place ���suitable for ��� dialogue between man and the Divine.��� Traditional interior decoration is practiced by Alex Bonello Depuis who has recently decorated his own domicile and a project in Sicily. Pippa Toledo, featured elsewhere in this issue of Hyland, mediates in her work between the Hyland streamlined and the soft. Francis Sultana and David Gill, dealers and curators also based in London, represent a corps of international tastemakers who also reside in Malta. They are doing a palazzo in Valletta, which will showcase the excellent work of Maltese artists and craftsmen. Geoffrey Aqualina, a former editor in chief of GQ, has written ���House in Malta,��� which features a wide array of interiors. One house, owned by Milan based Alan and Michaela Journo features a glass framed pool by architect Martin Xuereb. Paul Camilleri and Associates deserves its high reputation for a wide range of houses and buildings.
