Recently I discovered that during Fra Angelos State Visit to Malta,
he requested substantial return of property to the Order. In the full
flush and excitement of independence, one can well imagine and
understand the reply of the Malta government, a resounding no.
But now, just as his reign was coming to an end, he must have
been extremely pleased that Fort Saint Angelo, the jewel in
the crown of the Orders numerous spectacular structures,
would echo with the voices of the Knights, perhaps,
someday soon.
The Grand Master knew that the Knights Holy
Infirmary on Malta, during the period of its use,
arguably the most remarkable hospital in the world,
had been converted into the Mediterranean
Congress Center. Most probably, he had seen
a 1983 book on the subject by Paul
Cassar, also given to me
by Joe
