Only recently did I come to learn that his singular tenacity,
a generation earlier, substantially safeguarded the Order at a
time of peril, but that is another story. That earlier story does,
however, affirm that the Grand Master understood pivotal
moments and understood the importance of sustaining the
Orders presence, thereby assuring its ability to increasingly
perform works of mercy. He was frail, and would die soon but
he had made sure that the meeting occurred, as he wanted his
imprimatur on these events. The meeting took place because a
consensus had been reached among all parties that the project
should go forward. He was giving the entire endeavor, before
representatives of all parties, his public approval, thereby
assuring for posterity that no one could sequester his intentions.
