It is evident to all who love Malta and her people that the Maltese have a complex passion for and pride in their ancient, intricate history. Recall that the oldest freestanding dwelling in the world exists in Malta. In the brilliant book, Friends of Friends by Jeremy Boissevain the changing complexity of the Malta social structure and relationships is sympathetically reported. Where there might appear to be hostility marked-often by baseless even scurrilous remarks, one learns there could now or somewhat later be support, genuine collaboration and respect. But, come what may, the Maltese revere history. In 1983, Prime Minister Mifsud Bonnici, while Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, was also the Chairman of the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO. In my copy of Bulletin No. 5 of that organization, printed by the Maltese Government Press, it reports that Mifsud Bonnici, ������referred to Malta���s cultural heritage and stressed the importance attached by Malta to the preservation of this heritage.��� (p. 4). However different their approaches might be, all the above makes it very clear that there was complete unanimity among Labour and Nationalist circles in pursuing more affluent tourism, thereby celebrating, promoting and preserving Maltese culture and history. The Knights fell squarely in that category, undeniably a group that would encourage culture and commerce. With deep reverence as a result of a shared historical experience in the context, now, of the modern and dynamic Republic of Malta, the Knights would be welcome guests in the HYLAND
