A childhood visit to the Peabody Museum in nearby Salem introduced me to a sea beyond Massachusetts Bay, beyond the Atlantic and beyond Portugal on the other side of Columbus��� ocean sea, a place beyond the great banks and the wide domains of the Portuguese and Gloucester fishermen. The Mediterranean. In the museum, the deckhouse of Mr. Crowninshield���s early 19th century Nefertiti���s Barge of Salem remained as a testament to the Mediterranean travels of this first ever American yacht. I resolved to learn more about the Mediterranean. At Marblehead and Salem Public Libraries there were books that informed me about Italy and Greece and about Malta. The assault upon the post of Castille, July 29, 1565. Malta in particular intrigued me. In the middle of the Mediterranean it was a sort of crossroads. Epic battles were waged on the third floor, approximating those fought at Malta, at Fort Saint Angelo, Fort Saint Elmo and in America, at Yorktown and Saratoga.
