has a desire to remain connected to its most remarkable and glorious history there. Christopher Hyland���s observation about the remarkable gravestones which form the floor of the Co-Cathedral of Saint John reflect this deep history: ���Their tombstones embodied spirits of the fallen that it seemed should have common basis with their contemporary spiritual heirs both in the Order and in the Republic of Malta.��� This inspiring story is about just that ��� the fostering of the development of mutual ties between the Republic of Malta and the Order of Malta. The center of resistance against the Turkish siege in 1565 was the Fortress of San Angelo, of the Holy Angel. It is the site most closely tying the Order to the islands. It was the imagination of a young Christopher Hyland from Massachusetts, who had immersed himself in the history and lore of those brave heroes of Christendom, the famous Knights of Malta, who set the disparate matters in motion which years later led to the raising of the banner of the Order of Saint John once more over the ramparts of Fort San Angelo. No, he was not the single and only cause, nor was he present at the final signing of the agreements. But one can wonder whether that day of agreement would have come as soon or even at all had he not made the initial suggestion to Prime Minister Mifsud Bonnici and had he not continued his ongoing involvement in the preparatory efforts to see it through.
