Archbishop Cremona
would know well. Long, sonorous, dignified and deeply
spiritual, the service encapsulated a great part of the
Malta ethos.
I watched from the back, occasionally moving about
the church to take in the stupendous display of Maltese
craftsmanship, so deftly executed in their religious
sculpture, masonry, gilding, beadwork, woodcarving,
silver and gilt, ironwork and all that they put their hands
to. The early 19th century statue of St. Publius, the focal
point of the festa, is a masterpiece of its genre, possessing
a brilliant animation.
The President had much to be thankful for. By all
accounts, he is fulfilling his Constitutional obligations to
a fault as well as promoting the good image of Malta and
the cohesiveness of Malta society. He and Mrs. Abela,
poised and dignified, are Presidential. His birthday gift is
their success.
