n Sunday, the 24th of April, the President and First
Lady attended Mass at the grand St. Publius Church in
Floriana. It is named after Malta���s first Bishop, c. A.D.
60, a former Roman governor. It is the last grand church
built by the Order of Malta before their departure over
two hundred years ago.
Having been welcomed by Archpriest Borg, the President
and First Lady progressed to the front of the congregation
where they were seated to the front and left of the altar
behind their own predella beneath a soaring wall. One
imagines George Abela sitting there, his sixty-fifth birthday,
surveying the splendid decoration and ceremony, which
hallmarks Roman Catholic culture in Malta. The church
