In speaking Professor Kmiec said a constitution should
be brief, pointing out how I carry a copy of the United
States Constitution in my pocket. I proceeded to remove
my copy from my pocket and held it above my head for
all at the conference to see. Afterwards I recalled how, on
my first trip to Malta as a schoolboy, I had also traveled
with my first pocket copy of the constitution.
Although I had once suggested to the former Director
at the Center for the Constitution (at James Madison���s
Montpelier) that he consider holding a conference on
designing the Constitution, with an emphasis on the built
world, in which the Framers of the American Constitution
found themselves and the influence that world might have
had on them, I had never been to a meeting exploring
any constitutional issues. I found each speaker brought
