stately by several impressive gilt consoles and numerous
dark, massive gilt-framed portraits of previous Grand
Masters of the Order of Malta who had once ruled, are now
infused with a perfectly
orchestrated hierarchy
of color. Particularly
well conceived is the
central section of a deep
coved ceiling, in dark
color surrounded by a
generous band of white
above the cornice, with
similar arrangements of
contrasting colors below.
Massive solid pelmets,
deep at the top and
extending two-thirds of
the way down the sides
of the draperies placed
on every window and
egress, save one, impart
a daring, crisp, graphic
edge to the room.
Scalloped edges at the
bottom center and at the
bottom left and right of the pelmet extensions, each with
a small tassel, provide a softer design element. It is quite
amazing to see how expertly the designer conceived of
