Turkish ceramic
I thought of photographer Antonello Nusca���s dramatic picture
of a modern Pieta-like scene depicting a Malta volunteer
rescuing a refugee from the mid-Mediterranean Sea. This
image can be seen on the cover of Val Horsler���s and Julian
Andrews��� insightful book, The Order of Malta: A Portrait. This
humanitarian scene is the antithesis of the harrowing, albeit
heroic, events that are the traditional hallmark of Fort San
Angelo and of Fort San Elmo, its sister fort across the Grand
Harbor. Nusca���s image personifies in every way the peaceful
charisma of the Order today.
During my visit, everyone I encountered sincerely and
unanimously wished that the Sovereign Military Hospitaller
Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta be even
more a part of the dynamic, ongoing story of the Republic of
Malta. Conversations invariably lead to numerous ideas for
