principal grouping is centered on a fireplace with a low horizontal three part ancient mirror above it. Because of this mirrors scale, when a visitor is in this area of the room, one has the sense of intimacy. Pippa enhanced this feeling by placing tall bronze floor lamps with deep, large black shades lined in gold atop them. With the exception of the fabric on the canap, which matches that of the draperies, all the other textiles are velvets and satins without pattern. The rug placement in the current scheme is transitional, yet provides an appealing aesthetic. The final rug scheme will occupy the entire seating area adjacent to the fireplace, both to reinforce a sense of intimate scale and for practical facility as the Hall is used for concerts as well. One wants to be in this space for both State occasions as well as drinks with friends after dinner or to celebrate a birthday. I have rarely seen such a stately room inflected with dignity, modernity and warmth. HYLAND
