rest from the pursuit of one and safety
from the other. The matelasse bed
cover, linen slipcover and natural fiber
rug, all cream and off-white, offer the
temporary occupant a respite from
urban rooms of more colorful scheme.
Mark this, two components convey
the importance of this house: the lacecovered extended tester would suit a
Russian grand duchess summering in
Denmark; the dark walnut desk is of
substance and speaks to the weighty
world occupants of this room and of
this house know well.
Lest the reader think, from the
foregoing paragraphs, that Pinto is
only about ingeniously assembled
historicism, think again. The beach
apartment in Mexico is assertively
modern, executed, however, with
Pinto's unique talent for defying stylistic
straitjackets. The living room, with its
panoramic view of the ocean, evokes
Coco Chanel gone Hollywood, with
a distinct Continental air. The sofa
is formed in a bold, flirtatious curve
accentuated by a sweep of leopard
cushions, perhaps the designer's
witty allusion to the splendid Mexican
