imagined
that
Brazil was all just
about carnival feathers or soccer
players, and nothing really
fashionable", remarked an older
lady to the girl, seated to my left,
who was wearing a beautiful
black dress by Brazilian designer
Alexandre Herchcovitch. And
so, as I sat between those two
lovely women at a charity benefit
in New York City, I felt vulnerable
to the idea that one could still
have such a vision of the country
I was born in. I leaned in to ask
them if either had ever watched
the Brazilian movie They Don't
Wear Black Tie, circa 1981.
They just peered at me with an
excess of confusion.
Now more than ever, Brazil's
emerging strength is a hot
topic: from its being the future
host of the World Cup and the
Olympic Games to its having
recently overtaken the United
