"I imagined that Brazil was all just about carnival feathers or soccer players, and nothing really fashionable", remarked an older lady to the girl, seated to my left, who was wearing a beautiful black dress by Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchcovitch. And so, as I sat between those two lovely women at a charity benefit in New York City, I felt vulnerable to the idea that one could still have such a vision of the country I was born in. I leaned in to ask them if either had ever watched the Brazilian movie They Don't Wear Black Tie, circa 1981. They just peered at me with an excess of confusion. Now more than ever, Brazil's emerging strength is a hot topic: from its being the future host of the World Cup and the Olympic Games to its having recently overtaken the United Kingdom to become the world's HYLAND Backstage at Iodice, F/W 2012.
