Finally, the kitchen, designed by Brian Sawyer
is high-tech in function, stately home in
style, with tall glazed cabinets enameled in
white with nickel hardware, and honed black
granite countertops. The walls are tiled in a
white brickwork pattern, in contrast to the
floor, which is mahogany. The kitchen, like
the rest of the loft, is at first sight quite plain,
evincing a deceptive simplicity achieved by
the streamlined and unstinting use of the finest
materials to be gleaned from the marketplace. In
a corner, Bernice Abbots haunting photograph
Nightview contrasts the nocturnal splendor
of the New York metropolis with the simplest
of household artifacts: a broom. One inspires
awe, the other, the domestic: home.
Kelly is a master of the stylistic lessons of
Paris c. 1930 not to mention those of his late,
great mentor, Jed Johnson. But in working
with clients, whether Baroque or modern in
taste, Kelly leaves an imprint all his own, in his
selection and/or design of beautiful objects
and superb materials. H Lisa Zeiger
