My own appreciation of the wisdom of Empire style began
when I saw Empress Josephine���s bedroom at Malmaison,
just outside Paris. I now picture her bedroom as brown and
white with gilt embellishments and photographs on the Internet bear out this memory, although some sites describe
the color as red. There was no Internet the first time���or for
that matter the last���I visited Paris. For years, everywhere I
moved, I packed and unpacked an issue of World of Interiors from the early 1990s that featured a luscious spread on
the completed restoration of Malmaison.
I saw Malmaison three times, first in 1985 with the artistdecorator, Daniel Sachs, the second time in 1988 with
the great Sotheby���s teacher, Anne Ceresole, and the third
