Despite Forwood���s initial reluctance to have Dirk sell his artwork, eventually he comes around. After parting with an Egon Schiele painting, Bogarde gets enough cash to reupholster the entire Long Room in an expensive white Cogolin cotton and initiate various other improvements around the house. Triumph! A What a thrill it was to read that Dirk, with all his talent and fame and success, had moments when he realized that he couldn���t possibly live a fulfilling life surrounded by tired furniture. I could relate. In my own house, I had recently had two chairs upholstered in a pale blue velvet which I unexpectedly fell out of love with one day. At noon, they were soign��e and chic; by one o���clock, they were bland and one-note. From out of nowhere, an image of a young David Hockney wearing a pink and white plaid suit suffused my brain (was he sitting next to Cecil Beaton? In a hothouse surrounded by tropical flowers?). That was the feeling of the fabric I wanted. Something patterned and textured that would impart another layer of depth to the living room. Within the hour, I had canceled my dentist appointment, plonked my son in afterschool and was frenziedly procuring fabric samples. As fortune would have it, I found something nubby and navy and perfect and I can���t tell you how happy it makes me every day to see those two adorable plaid creatures angled in conversation on my white cowhide rug. In fact, I solemnly promise here and now to love them right up until the moment I hate them. (As my husband said recently, ���I can live with your fickleness as long as it���s restricted to the furnishings.���) HYLAND
